Day 6

Today, we started the day by learning about life on a farm in the 19th century. We wrote a short story about what a day on a farm from that time period would be. After we finished these stories, we visited Carriage Hill Farm, which is a farm from this time period. While there, we got to see some of the things they would have used, like the blacksmith area, an oven, barns, and animals. Some of the animals there were goats, chickens, horsed and pigs. Me and a few friends also decided to take a hike which led us to a main road. We also went to a creek and skipped rocks for a while. Overall, today was a very fun day and I would maybe want to go to carriage hill again.

Today, while at the farm, I learned that life on a farm might not be as bad as I originally thought. When you aren't actually working on the farm, there's so much land and wooded areas that you could explore. The farm land was so large and it would be a lot of fun just to mess around there after finishing your daily farm responsibilities.

Life on a Farm Short Story

There’s always something to do while living on a farm. I’m only 15, but my day is packed with chores and farm work. When I wake up at 5 A.M. I go out to milk the cows and gather the eggs from the chickens. I make this milk into butter. Once I’m done with this, I make my rounds feeding the smaller animals, like chickens. I then milk the goats which is the milk we use to drink and to sell. I then give the large animals their food and water. After I finish feeding all the animals, I have to trim their hooves and bathe the animals. Once I’m done with animal care, I have to plant crops and maintain the fields and garden. If father needs me to, I will build enclosures for more animals to use. I can then plant vegetables and fruits. Once I’m done with this, it’s already time to go inside and eat dinner. After dinner, I make sure to feed the animals and give them water again, then I can be done for the day unless I need to help deliver baby animals. After I’m done with all this work, I’m completely exhausted and ready for bed so I can wake up and do this all over again.

Living on a farm is very tedious, but I like always having something to do. I’m rarely ever bored throughout the day. One downside though, is the smell. Even though I bathe all the animals, the farm still smells bad. I’ve gotten more used to it as I live here longer, but I still hate the smell. Thankfully, I don’t have to clean the pins, but I’m in their tending to the animals almost all day. I am happy that the farm is pretty large though. This means I can be away from my family if I ever want to, and there’s a lot of places to adventure in my free time. I can’t wait until I’m an adult and get to have my own farm, it’s what I’m preparing for as I work at my parents farm. I do have siblings that help with some of this farm work, but everybody still does so much work on the farm. This is just a day in the life of a kid working on a farm.
